i was feeling disappointed about how badly i was doing in general and was telling Jesus how sorry I was for being so weak and failing over and over again..then this song came on the radio…

Horatio Spafford was a successful lawyer who lost his only son right before he was financially ruined by the Great Chicago Fire. Some years later, he planned to travel with his wife and four daughters to Europe, but he sent his family ahead and promised to follow because of some last-minute business. While crossing the Atlantic, the ship collided with another ship and sank rapidly. His wife sent him an achingly short telegram: “Saved Alone.”

Shortly after, while traveling on his way to be with his grieving wife, Spafford wrote this hymn as he sailed past the sea where his daughters died.

It Is Well With My Soul

When peace like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Refrain:

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,

To go through one tragedy after another..and to be grateful and sing that everything is well with your soul..that is a kind of peace that transcends all understanding.

i am listening to a talk by ravi zacarias and dr. william craig on the top five questions college students ask about Christianity:

  1. what is the meaning of life?
  2. how can we know that the Christian God even exists?
  3. how can the Christian God, who is claimed to be all-good and all-powerful, allow there to be evil in the world?
  4. how can we know that Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the dead is really a historical fact and not simply a legend?
  5. given that there are many people of other philosophies and religions and world views that are good people and yet they have not put their exclusive faith in Jesus Christ, how is it fair that those people are not saved?

very intriguing questions….and the answers are as compelling. it’s important for every christian to find out what the truth is and give a reason for their hope. i’ll be posting my notes on the answers as i finish each topic. or you can listen to the discussions here.

i first heard this poem during service and it bought tears to my eyes. you’ll understand why after you read about the poet’s life.

HE GIVETH MORE GRACE
